Promoting Your Business – Not Just Your Website

I’ve already covered how to help your website get found in other posts. This one is about promoting your actual business — not just your website.

It’s easy to assume that once you’ve built a website, customers will start finding you. And with the right on-page SEO, keyword research, backlinks and a well-structured site, some people will find you naturally through Google.

However, in competitive markets or when you’re targeting a large area, relying on search alone isn’t always enough. To really stand out and attract customers consistently, you need to actively promote your business – beyond just your website.

Think of your website as your home base. It’s where people go when they’ve found you, but you also need ways to help them discover you in the first place.

1. Tell People You Exist

The oldest form of promotion is often the most overlooked. Let people know what you do:

  • Tell friends, family, and past customers about your new business

  • Hand out business cards or flyers locally or to potential clients

  • Add your website to email signatures and social media profiles

  • Mention your services in everyday conversations

Even small conversations can lead to new customers. Word of mouth still works, especially when combined with an online presence.

2. Be Where Your Customers Are

Your website isn’t the only place people look. Make sure you’re visible on platforms your customers already use:

  • Google Business Profile

  • Local directories

  • Industry-specific listings

  • Community groups or social pages

These platforms can drive traffic back to your website and help people find you quickly. Add as much info to your lisiting as possible.

3. Share Content on Social Media

Social media doesn’t have to be complicated. Pick 1–2 platforms your audience actually uses and keep it simple:

  • Post photos of your work or products

  • Discuss your latest projects

  • Share tips, work-in-progress or business news

Consistency matters more than perfection, try to post regular updates, even if they’re short.

4. Join Conversations and Groups

Social media is also about connecting with people and showing your expertise:

  • Participate in relevant groups or forums

  • Answer questions and share advice

  • Comment on other posts thoughtfully

This builds relationships, trust, and visibility and often drives people back to your website.

5. Encourage Reviews

Positive reviews build trust and help new customers choose you. Make it easy for clients to leave feedback:

  • Send a short follow-up message after a job or purchase

  • Include a direct link to your Google Business Profile or preferred review site

  • Remind customers that even a few sentences or a star rating counts

  • Thank people for taking the time to leave a review

Regularly encouraging reviews keeps your business visible and shows potential customers that you’re reliable.

6. Keep Showing Up

Marketing isn’t a one-time task, it works best when it becomes a regular habit. Small, consistent efforts over time make a big difference. Some ways to stay visible include:

  • Post regular updates on social media

  • Engage with your community online or in person

  • Attend local events or networking opportunities

  • Follow up with past customers with news or offers

These small, ongoing actions help your business stay in people’s minds, even in a crowded market, and give your website the best chance to turn visitors into customers.

Bringing It All Together

Marketing your business works best when it becomes a habit. Make a simple plan, decide which actions you’ll take each week, and stick to it.

Small, regular efforts like posting updates, engaging with your community, asking for reviews, or following up with customers will all add up over time. Consistency builds visibility, trust, and growth.

Promoting your business is about showing up, regularly and deliberately, so people notice you.
